Arystech Envision - Transforming Patient Care by leveraging AWS IoT, Amazon Connect
Heart disease remains one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide, with conditions like atrial fibrillation (AFIB) and heart failure requiring consistent and accurate monitoring to catch early signs before they escalate into more severe complications.
In this post, we will explore how Arystech developed a comprehensive health monitoring solution using AWS services by integrating the power of the AWS IoT (Internet of Things) and other AWS services like Amazon Connect, and Amazon RDS that could track key metrics in real-time, distilling data into meaningful, operationalizable intelligence to elevate the standard of patient care. This solution also offers a web-based portal tailored for hospitals, doctors, and patients alike, allowing them to monitor data in an immediate and comprehensive way.
Solution overview
Integrating IoT and AWS services in healthcare can revolutionize patient monitoring, device diagnostics, and data management. We collaborated with a few customers to develop a comprehensive heart monitoring solution powered by AWS to track key health metrics and provide timely and actionable insights to improve patient outcomes. This solution represents a shift from reactive to proactive care, using real-time data to inform healthcare decisions and deliver personalized patient care. In addition to leveraging real-time physiological data, this heart monitoring solution includes a web-based portal with specific roles for hospitals, doctors, and patients to monitor real-time and historical data.
Solution architecture
The architecture diagram displays how AWS services in Arystech Envision work together to collect, process, and respond to real-time patient data. This ensures timely action to prevent health complications and improve long-term care and quality of life.
Key components of the architecture:
Wearable Devices (Sensors): These devices continuously capture physiological data from patients, which include Blood Pressure, ECG, SPO2, Heart Rate, Body Temperature, Sleep Patterns, Respiration Rate.
AWS IoT Greengrass:The data is processed locally at the edge using AWS IoT Greengrass, ensuring immediate data filtering and analysis can occur even offline. This minimizes latency and bandwidth usage while still capturing essential metrics.
AWS IoT Core: The system uses AWS IoT Core to transmit physiological data securely from wearable devices to the cloud via MQTT messaging. This ensures real-time transmission and communication between devices and the cloud infrastructure.
AWS Lambda: Data processing in the cloud is managed by AWS Lambda functions, which analyze patient metrics in real-time to detect abnormalities. These functions are triggered when data arrives in AWS IoT Core, ensuring no significant health event is missed.
Data Storage with Amazon RDS: Processed and historical patient data is securely stored in Amazon RDS. Healthcare providers can access this data to analyze trends over time, allowing for data-driven decisions on patient treatment and care plans.
Real-Time Monitoring via Web Portal with WebSockets: The system includes a web portal that offers role-based access for patients, doctors, and hospital administrators. WebSockets power real-time data updates, ensuring that health metrics and device statuses are reflected instantly, allowing stakeholders to respond immediately to changes.
Visual Analytics and Device Diagnostics: The portal provides visual dashboards with real-time analytics, displaying key health trends and highlighting anomalies. Integrated with GenAI, it predicts device issues and offers automated troubleshooting, ensuring seamless monitoring and performance.
How does the Solution work?
Leveraging AWS IoT and Data-Driven Insights The heart monitoring device uses AWS IoT Greengrass to capture and process patient data at the edge, meaning that much of the analysis happens close to the source of data collection—on the patient's wearable device. MQTT messaging allows the device to send physiological data, such as blood pressure, ECG, heart rate, and more, in real-time to AWS IoT Core. Once the data reaches AWS IoT Core, AWS Lambda functions are triggered to analyze the data, instantly flagging any anomalies such as abnormal heart rhythms or blood pressure spikes. This real-time processing means healthcare providers can intervene before a minor issue becomes a serious medical event. Moreover, the processed data is securely stored in Amazon RDS for long-term use, enabling healthcare providers to access historical health trends and make informed decisions on patient care plans.
Enhancing Communication with Amazon Connect Seamless communication is crucial in healthcare, especially when dealing with high-risk conditions like heart disease. To facilitate real-time, multi-channel communication, we integrated Amazon Connect into the heart monitoring system. When a health alert is triggered—such as a sudden spike in heart rate—the IoT device sends a trigger to a Lambda function, which then creates an Amazon Connect case and assigns it to the relevant caregiver. This system ensures that patients are always aware of their health status and that healthcare professionals can act swiftly. The Amazon Connect case also triggers an SMS alert using AWS End User Messaging to be sent to the assigned doctor's office so they are informed of the issue. Arystech Envision workflow also helps manage technical issues related to wearable devices. For example, if a sensor disconnects or malfunctions, a notification is automatically dispatched to the relevant support teams, ensuring minimal disruption to patient monitoring.
GenAI for Device Diagnostics Arystech is looking at the future to enhance Envision by leveraging Generative AI (GenAI) to efficiently optimize device diagnostics using Amazon Bedrock. This integration will enable more accurate and efficient predictive maintenance, ensuring wearable devices operate at peak performance. Predictive Maintenance Enhancements with the Amazon Bedrock system will analyze historical data patterns to anticipate potential device failures or performance issues, including sensor calibration needs and battery life depletion. Enhancing real-time diagnostics can be improved using Amazon Bedrock's capabilities to revolutionize wearable devices.
